Actually, some of them do. I spent my last ten years at Dolby Labs. They reward productivity, spectacularly.
There are people who understand that when work brings personal satisfaction it creates a productivity boost unlike anything you'll see by commanding people to work long hours.
They also understand the value of time off to regenerate and stay connected to family. I got three raises in one year because I created something they valued.
I hear what you are saying, certainly Amazon isn't going to win any HR awards, but I get frustrated with so much negative writing around work. If I were to believe what I read on Medium, I'd never even try to find a decent job or ask for a raise or promotion. I'd cry myself to sleep every night and view my life as hopeless.
This is what I call "negativity porn."
It gets angry people even angrier because now they can justify their anger having read about how unfair life is online. It's grievance politics. I thought the right had a monopoly on it.
