Another excellent article! I think I found a typo though: "But many specialists cannot adapt. They are receptive to change."

Did you mean "They are not receptive to change."?

When working at Dolby Labs, we did strength assessments. It's surprising how much insight a good assessment (I'm thinking of the Clifton Strengths) can provide while also confirming the areas where you're most likely to get results.

For example, my top strength is "Activator." These are people who can turn thoughts into actions. Some people have this, some don't.

I've known dozens of smart, capable people who always know what needs to be done, but for some reason, they can't make it happen. They need an Activator on their team to turn ideas into concrete steps. Once I understood this, I also understood how to make myself more valuable to the company.

So, yes, it's important to be able to learn across domains, but it's also important to understand the specific strengths you bring to the table. This way regardless of the domain you work in, you can do your best work.
