When will we stop pretending that the ability to turn on our own is a badge of honor? It’s one thing to abhor hypocrisy — it’s another to see it where it doesn’t exist.
Hunter Biden was persecuted — not prosecuted. He was given a reasonable plea deal, and then it got yanked out from under him because Republican operatives exerted undue influence on the legal system. His crime, which is historically almost never prosecuted, was lying on a form to get a handgun. He had the gun for twelve days. He never used it.
Meanwhile, his laptop was stolen, and his personal life was spread all over the media. It wasn’t because he did anything unusual or criminal in the typical sense — his was truly a victimless crime. There is only one reason the original plea deal was repealed: Republicans wanted to fuck with Joe Biden.
Hunter, a former addict, has more than paid for his sins. He has paid back all his back taxes and has suffered extraordinary humiliation for his behavior while addicted to drugs. Nobody who has been through the series of family tragedies Hunter and Joe Biden have suffered would be unscathed. It is astonishing that both President Biden and Hunter are doing so well now. It’s a testament to courage and self-discipline.
