Excellent point.
I think we (the majority of our populace) are for religious freedom and they (the majority of Republicans in office and all of Trump's base) are for theocracy (and unfortunately, they are also the majority of SCOTUS justices right now.)
But we can make progress in Congress if we vote them out.
Then we need to create SCOTUS ethics rules and determine an enforcement mechanism to ensure they are followed and take corrective action if not.
We did have a small win on that front recently with an effort led by Sheldon Whitehouse. It just means SCOTUS judges must report gifts--but it's something.
Prior to that virtually every issue related to SCOTUS was policed by SCOTUS. We saw how well that worked out with their botch investigation into the Dobbs leak.
(I suspect Ginny Thomas did it. But it would be nice to know if I'm wrong.)
