I believe Russia wants Ukraine's grain. There is a reason Ukraine has been called "The bread basket of the world."

Putin also want to be seen as a conqueror and the restorer of the Soviet Union so those are big things he wants that Ukraine can give him. If there was nothing he needed there, I don't think he'd be there.
