I have to respond to this. How people are treated and how well the work fits into their personal need for creative and challenging work is infinitely more important to most than just the $.
Granted, I'm talking about tech jobs and engineers, specifically, but so is the writer.
I spent the last ten years of my career at Dolby Labs. We were paid well, but nobody stayed for that. They stayed because the company took an interest in each person's development and allowed us to stretch and try new things.
I know most companies are not like that, but based on what Doug wrote here, it sounds like he did provide that to his people. So m guess is that he didn't mention the money because that wasn't the key issue.
