I think you've misunderstood her. German soldiers were brainwashed just like Trump supporters. Understanding how they thought is key to understanding how this happened. Without them, the atrocities of the holocaust would not have been carried out.
Students should understand this phenomenon of fabricating and forcing a Big Lie onto an entire population. If we had learned that earlier, Trump's Big Lie would not have taken hold, IMO.
I don't believe this teacher is advocating that we take sides with the German soldiers, only that we hear their perspective while also learning that the purpose of Hitler's reign of terror was to create a "master race," which required eliminating Jews and anyone who sympathized with them.
If students also learn that Hitler and his minions convinced themselves that non-Arians were less than human. Therefore all the horrors done to them were justified--they will learn the process of reconciling conflicting viewpoints.
This will spur a discussion of values that they will benefit from. And it's a discussion they likely won't have anywhere else except Church or home where authority figures will work to push their own views rather than give students the opportunity to have open discussions and come to their own conclusions.
