MSNBC host, Joy Reid, brought up the problem with so-called "balanced coverage" a few years ago. She made the exact point you are making now. She is the only one, as far as I know.
The other day, Jake Tapper interviewed the Republican head of the Intelligence Committee. As the Republican spewed nonsense about Biden using the Attorney General as a political weapon to persecute Trump, Tapper never attempted to point out that evidence of Republicans behaving this way is rampant but no one has presented any evidence of Biden and Garland behaving this way. He just let him go without questioning anything he said.
I was horrified. I was trained, years ago, in the in the Edward R. Murrow school of journalism. We were taught that critical thinking was the responsibility of every journalist. When confronted with a statement that could not be substantiated, we were required to point that out.
I found myself shouting at the television, "This Republican is projecting their tactics onto Democrats--where is the evidence where that this is happening? On what do you base this outrageous assumption? Just because Trump did it doesn't mean Biden does!"
Why did Tapper allowing this smear of the president and our justice department, without even asking for evidence? Now I know.
Thank you for writing this.
