I know you're right, but the study I read says that generally conservatives can't handle uncertainty. They don't think acknowledging helplessness is good--it scares the crap out of 'em!
Their feelings are their values--you're heading nowhere with them on this one.
As for tolerating other people's painful emotions, they don't tolerate other people, period. Unless, you're just like them.
