This is fascinating but by no means a Christian phenomenon--it's generational.
Ever since my peers starting having kids, it's all about how much parents can do for their kids rather than what they can teach them. This was not the norm when I grew up.
Parents don't discipline now, they buddy up with their kids. Nobody wants to say "no" so parents brag about how much they can give to or do for their kids. Consequently, there are a lot of entitled brats roaming around.
I don't see any connection to religion here, though I'm sure it also occurs in religious households. It seems to be more about showing how much money you have to throw at your kids and how much parents are willing to sacrifice to give their kids everything they ask for.
The irony here is that what kids need and what they ask for are not the same--and it's the parents who are supposed to know that.
