This is very interesting. It made me think of the show Little Fires Everywhere. The white woman was constantly offering up little things to her black friend, which consistently reinforced the idea that the white woman was somehow better and always had something to offer; which in in turn, implied that her black friend was somehow deficient.
I recently became re-acquainted with a black woman from high school. We met at the company where we both worked. She had raised three lovely sons (mostly by herself) and had a good job at a higher level in the organization than me. I was very happy to see her but greatly saddened to hear from her how hard her life had been.
I am glad that our world appears to be changing. Glad that people like you are writing about this. Sometimes it is easier to read someone else's story and find truth in it than it is to face truth on our own.
